Scholarship

    The way in which an employer or other organisation may provide you with financial support and practical training while you are taking a course in higher education. This enables employers who are looking for promising recruits to begin training at an earlier stage than if they waited for students to complete their subject area.





Qualifications in Higher education

  • MChem - Master of Chemistry

  • PhD - Doctor of Philosophy
    - The highest postgraduate research degree that can cover any subject area.

  • MPhil - Master of Philosophy
    - Research degree normally converted into a PhD.
    - Has no connection to philosophy

  • BSc - Bachelor of Science

  • BA - Bachelor of Arts

  • BBA - Bachelor of Business Administration

  • BD - Bachelor of Divinity

  • BEd - Bachelor of Education

  • Undergradate first class (Honours) degree is the highest degree awarded
  • 2:1 is a upper Second class honours
  • 2:2 is a lower Second class honours
  • "Third" is a third class honours
  • Finally, there is a "pass or Ordinary degree"

    Recruitment Fair


    Recruitment Fair is an exhibition held in different parts of the country by large amounts of Top employers from different disciplines. These recruiters normally give presentations, and are interested in offering job opportunities to motivated and keen graduates. To prepare for a fair, try and attend pre-fair preparation sessions. These sections, will help you prepare for the main fair. Enquire about companies that will attend, and visit their websites. Prepare an up to date CV, and be prepared to fill in application forms. Try and dress smart, as first impression counts a lot. For more informations about fairs, visit your local campus career center, and our job section.     Covering letter


    It is a letter that you normally send off with your CV. Try and make it a targetted letter, and CV. This shows that you are solely interested in the company . Send off hand written letters, or typed if you haven't a good writing. Finally, please remember to include "http://www.studentinfor.bizland.com" as your reference.



    National insurance number, popularily known as "NI".



    This number is required by every worker. To get one, you have to visit your local social security office. Before you apply for your NI number, you must first obtain a job. After filling the required forms, you are normally given a temporary NI number. The form is called CA5403 (CF88) application.
    Note, you don't have to pay an NI contribution, if you are on full-time education and unemployed. You pay a contribution if you are a full-time student and earning at least 63pounds 99 per week(tax year 1998/99). You pay your NI in other to qualify for pension, unemployment benefit and much more.     Loan


    Is money borrowed off an organisation. Remember that loans have to be "PAID" back. There are normally conditions on paying back(interests) loans. Try and read the small prints and ask about the about "interests"

    Hardship Loan


    This is an additional Supplementary Loan of up to ?00 for students in financial difficulty. This loan is means tested, therefore students will need to provide verification of income and expenditure and also demonstrate they have explored other ways of supporting themselves. Students must must be in receipt of Student Loan to be eligible and applications are made at the Student Finance Centre. This additional loan will be repaid along with your Student Loan after graduation.

    When you ring an ambulance


    Ask others around you to be silent. Have the address ready for the operator.

    Be calm and co-operative.

    Advice the operator that there has been a collapse.

    The operator will tell you what to do until the ambulance arrives.

    The police do not automatically attend an overdose situation.

    When the ambulance officers arrive tell them the person has been having difficulty breathing.

    Tell the officer exactly what drugs have been taken and when. If the person has had methadone as well as other drugs, the officer need to know.

    If you are the only other person around and you have to leave them to ring the ambulance, put them on the floor in the recovery position.

    Remember: The ambulance officer are there to help you.

    University clearing (niss)


    "Clearing" is that process by which students without a place at a UK university or HE college can be matched with vacant places on different courses or at different institutions. Many sites maintain lists of current vacancies to help with this. The information becomes available after the publication of "A" level examination results in August, and will be made available here.
